In 2016, the Mercedes E-Class completed two decades of its official existence in the Indian sub-continent. Even after all these years, the premium executive sedan remains the best-seller in its segment despite the mounting pressure from its German rivals – Audi and BMW. Now for the first time it is being offered as a long wheelbase version.
This new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is longer than the outgoing model and hence has been termed the E-Class LWB. The grille is upright and pronounced while the lines are curvy and flowing indicating a design similar to that of the S-Class. From a distance the only thing that would give away the E-Class from the S and the C would probably be the alloy wheel design. However, the E-Class is now much closer to the S-Class in terms of length as it a long wheelbase version and this is not a bad thing at all as the S-Class has been a super successful model for the German automaker.
The cabin of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been updated to mimic that of the S-Class. You get space to seat five in great comfort and everything has been trimmed out in leather and high quality plastics. Because this is a long wheelbase car you also get additional leg room to stretch out in the rear. The E-Class is an executive sedan and comes loaded with all creature comforts. It gets dual-zone climate control with AC vents for the rear passengers. The front seats are electrically adjustable including the headrests and get memory function. The party piece of this new E-Class is the extra 100mm of length at the back for more rear leg room. The steering is manually adjustable for rake and reach. The upholstery is in leather and the steering gets audio controls for the infotainment system with a display screen. The infotainment system gets Bluetooth, AUX and USB inputs and is controlled by the rotary knob on the centre console. The rear windows get blinds along with the rear windscreen blind which is electrically operated. Panoramic sunroof is standard across all variants while the E-Cabriolet gets an electrically operated convertible soft top.
Engine and Gearbox
The E-Class sedan is offered with two engine options – one petrol and one diesel engine. The petrol variant is powered by a 2.0-litre unit that is good for 181bhp of power at 5,500rpm and 300Nm of torque. E 350 CDI variant gets a 3.0-litre engine that churns out a maximum power output of 265bhp at 3,800rpm and a peak torque of 620Nm at 1,600rpm. Both motors are paired to a nine-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels.
The E-Cabriolet (E400) gets a 3.5-litre petrol V6 engine which develops 333bhp of power at 5300rpm and 480Nm of torque from 1600rpm thanks to the twin-turbos. Mercedes also offers the bonkers E63 AMG with a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine developing a whopping 557bhp of power at 5500rpm and 720Nm of torque from 1750rpm. The E-Class is offered with driving modes including economy, comfort and sport to cater to varied driving requirements.
